It is 1994 in Cedeira. Lena and the other shellfish gatherers are fighting for equal employment rights in the face of a town and a society that refuse to accept them. When they find a foreign woman on the beach, a refugee from the Bosnian War who is alone and pregnant, Lena and the other shellfish gatherers take her in and care for her as one of their own.
